Poster Sessions at EDUCAUSE 2017 a Big Hit … WTC sponsors the event again.

Over 150 colleges and universities participated in the EDUCAUSE 2017 Poster Sessions in Philadelphia, up from 104 participants at EDUCAUSE 2016.  These sessions are informal one-on-one discussions with frontline campus innovators who have expertise and knowledge in implementing a project on campus, and share their story with graphics and posters.  Presentations are organized under one of the eight conference organizational domains.  This enables the attendees to concentrate on their areas of interest and visit the presenter with whom they share mutual interests.  Attendees were very appreciative of the quality and depth of the material provided, and many attendees visited the sessions both days.

WTC Consulting, Inc. sponsored the Poster Sessions for the second year.  Our session was titled “Using Activity Based Costing to Identify the Cost of Delivering IT Services.”  What is the best way to determine the cost of IT, generate forecasts, and benchmark against peers?  The project leaders described cost drivers, methodology, rate philosophies, campus engagement, and implementation challenges.  The WTC Team used the results to allocate IT costs, evaluate outsourcing targets, identify cost-cutting goals, and more.

Some attendee comments:

  • “Poster session are awesome.  Lots of conversations on cool projects and collaboration! #EDU17;”
  • “I love the poster sessions! So much good information.  So engaging. #EDU17;”
  • “Analytics is rapidly changing the way we make decisions.  Now we have factual data that supports decision making. #EDU17;”
  • “The two poster sessions at #EDU17 on IT Security were excellent.”

Activity Based Costing Presentation at NACUBO 2016 Montreal

“Using Activity Based Costing to Identify the Cost to Deliver IT Services” will be presented by the University of Illinois at Chicago and WTC Consulting, Inc. during the NACUBO 2016 Annual Meeting on July 18, 8:30-9:45 a.m. in Concurrent Session IV.

What is the best way to determine the cost of IT, generate forecasts, and benchmark against peers?  These questions drove an activity-based costing project by the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and WTC Consulting, which identified 190 Basic Products and Service Elements (BPSE™) in the university’s central IT department.  The elements formed a transparent picture of IT roles, activities, and costs, creating the basis for a new rate and funding strategy that yielded a bundled common services model.  Hear the project leaders describe cost drivers, methodology, rate philosophies, campus engagement, and implementation challenges.  The panel will also address using results to allocate IT costs, evaluating outsourcing targets, identifying cost-cutting goals, and more.

Learning Objectives:

● Learn different rate and funding philosophies that work in higher education.

● Discover that not all metrics for comparison are created equal.

● Find out which decision-making structure builds buy-in from the start.
